About Zing

Zing Choir is a community choir with men and women of many nationalities who enjoy singing just for fun. We sing professionally, sometimes specially arranged, feel-good songs from Fleetwood Mac to The Beatles, The Mamas and the Papas to U2.

If you love to sing, then this is the choir for you. Anyone of any ability or experience can join. Our ethos is that anyone can take part, as long as they enjoy it. There are no auditions, no requirement to read music or sing on your own in a solo unless you want to.

At the end of the term we will perform for our friends and family to share the fun we have Zinging.

In taking part, you will learn how to sing better, enjoy fun up-beat rehearsals, boost your confidence and make new friends. Quite simply, it’s your chance to sing your favourite feel-good hits and to have a good time to boot.

Zing offers a very different experience to the traditional choirs.  Our aim is to enjoy ourselves, first and foremost, with quality of singing very much a secondary goal!  We practise once a week, for about 90 minutes, and move rapidly from song to song to keep the experience fun and energetic.

We currently have a soprano section, an alto section and a male section, with easy-to-master harmonies arranged specifically for each.

The History of Zing

Zing Bangkok was started by two British expat ladies in September 2012.  Bangkok already had a thriving music scene, but the existing music societies proved to be a little too serious for them, and didn't have the kind of repertoire that they wanted to sing. What they were looking for was something that was a bit more fun and a bit more modern - something more like Glee for grown-ups.  And so Zing was born.

Zing went from strength to strength over its first 3 terms, with Rodel Rivera as our musical director.

At the beginning of Term 4 Zing appointed a new musical director, Sian Jones, to lead us on the next stages of the Zing journey. Sian was with us until the end of term 9 (June 2015), when she left Bangkok for new adventures.

Then at the beginning of Term 10 (September 2015) Saranya (Pook) Saratham took over the reins as Zing Director to expand our repertoire further and challenged the choir to sing their first song in Thai.

From term 12 April 2016 until term 21 April 2019 Zing was led by Danielle Fieller. Danielle took Zing Choir Bangkok to a new level, even exploring their Opera skills for a performance in co-operation with the Variety Showcase.

Since September 2019 Zing Choir Bangkok is led by Simon Green who has taken us from the Rolling Stones to Jason Mraz and from Shakin' Stevens to Tears for Fears.

Simon Green - Musical Director

Simon began his musical journey at the age of 5, learning first the violin and then the piano.

He performed in many youth orchestras and choirs and had several of his compositions performed by his school Chamber Orchestra. At the University of York, Simon spent his time composing and working in local schools providing workshops to students of all ages and abilities.

Since completing his teaching degree in 2007, Simon has taught Music in international schools from Panama to Cairo (and Bangkok!). Simon has conducted, directed, played the piano, sung and arranged for many adult choirs and as he often mentions: Tuesday evenings are his favourite evenings!
